It had been some time since I’d let myself fully sleep. Just drift away into the liminal darkness and rest. I woke up refreshed and ready to tackle the day. And more than a little surprised at nothing having interrupted my night. It was a great night’s sleep.

I looked around at the rest of the group in the dim light of the hold and saw nearly everyone waking up, too. There were groans, stretches, a few coughs and snorts. But everyone as a group came to basically at the same time.

That gave me pause, and I felt a spike of fear shoot through me. Anxiety over what I was missing.

“Harpy,” I snapped.

“Aye,” he replied, wiping something gross out of his eye.

“Why did we all wake up at the same time?” I asked.

He shrugged, then reached his arms high above his head almost involuntarily.

“Whatinsoever be the case,” he said through a yawn, “I be appreciative. Best sleep I had in ages.”

“Headcount,” I said. “Anyone missing?”

It actually took a few minutes to get everyone alert enough to count each other, but we were all present.

“Is it daytime?” I asked.

“Only one way to tell,” Rose said, pulling straps tight on her armor.

“I’m coming with you,” I said, walking to the main door.

“You see daylight,” Harpy said, “it be safe.”

I opened the door a teensy crack.

Sunlight streamed down the stairs.

I threw the door open.

“Made it,” I said.

Harpy frowned, pushed through the group and walked by me and up the stairs without a hesitation.

I followed him.

It was a beautiful, sunny morning.

Harpy strode up and down the deck, peering over at the water here and there, before getting to the bow and standing over the anchor chain.

“Everything okay?” I called.

“Aye,” he replied. “Close to perfect.”

“Why do you sound disappointed?”

“Strange for it to be so,” he said.

“Maybe we should just accept the gift from Picus, eh?” I asked, and clapped his shoulder.

“Aye,” he said with a slight nod. “Maybe... maybe.”

I couldn’t blame him for not wanting to give it to the god of luck. He wanted to know what had happened.

But not me. I was happy to take the W in whatever means it came. In this case of mystery luck, I was thrilled to get a break. While Harpy puttered around the ship, checking everything he could to see if there was some infernal trick at work, I got the rest of the crew up and working. We hadn’t been sailing much during the days, but I wanted to make up ground. Or, in this case, water. I wanted to get down to Tingkaroon and get across west and then go north and then come back east to hit up the damn City of Darkness and then go home to god damn Glaton. I shook my head. How had I managed to let Lux talk me into this crap?

Then I
